The complete list of all European Conflicts and wars is horrendous, embarrassing. It seems the first known actual major European battle field has been found in Germany, north of Berlin at the Tollense Valley, dating to about 1275 BC (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tollense_valley_battlefield) Another famous European battle from about the same time was the famous Siege of Troy by the Mycenaean fleets sung of by Homer, which archaeology has also proved were real conflicts that took place at the very meeting point of Europe and Asia. In a sense this was the first European-Asian conflict. Below is a reasonably comprehensive list of all the know wars in European history and it makes for grim reading. This is the legacy that we in the European Wing of the World Intellectual Forum are up against. We are trying to end this cycle of endless fighting and killing now, in our generation. We have had enough. Not least because Europe also has a habit of exporting its wars. World War One and Two began effectively as European civil wars but then spilled over into becoming global conflicts. the cold war raged above Europe's air space and in our fields and forests and cities, and if a world war three ever broke out Europe would be entirely devastated and rendered uninhabitable for future generations by nuclear weapons. We cannot and will not allow this to happen. But in order to prevent it, one of our urgent intellectual tasks is to study how this dreadful litany of wars have occurred in the first place, to understand their dynamics, their relationship with the growing sophistication of military technology, their relationship to the evolution of money, wealth, social stratification and the economic concentration of wealth and resources. In each epoch, usually the group or tribe with the strongest weapons gained control of the most economic resources. The socialist critique of the origins of capitalism needs to have this growth of militarism and the militarisation of the economy factored into it to make sense of why this litany of conflicts has been going on unchecked for centuries. European intellectuals struggle against this tragedy in each epoch and came up with peace plans, but as yet the military industrial complex has always managed to invent new causes and conflicts for the general population to cheer behind, leaving genuine intellectuals who oppose war in a minority. But now is no longer the time to be sidelined. We have a duty as European intellectuals,. from every part of our geographical continent, to work together until this war dynamic is solved, thus liberating resources to tackle the numerous other problems we are facing as a continent and as a world. This is the other reason the vast majority of forward looking peace thinkers and intellectuals in Europe support the work of the European Union - for the very first time in European history it has created a political structure which makes war between its 27 member countries unthinkable. It is also for the this reason that the World intellectual Forum in Europe has been campaign strongly against Brexit, and for the right of Scotland and Northern Ireland to remain in the European Union, and likewise for the entire UK to be given a second referendum. This is far too important a matter to be decided as a result of proven illegal electioneering by psychological warfare operatives working for the very military industrial complex that wants to go on profiting from the war business.
